After worship on Sunday, May 19, we will gather in Willett Hall for a Celebratory Luncheon, a catered meal hosted by our Stewardship Ministry Team. Our youth are once again participating in a CityReach weekend of learning and service, hosted by our partner in ministry, Common Cathedral. Our CityReach clothing drive is collecting durable men's or unisex clothing, especially in large or extra-large sizes, as well as underwear, undershirts, socks, bras, toiletries, and menstrual products. This morning, we welcome students and staff from McCormack Middle School in Dorchester. Teacher and church member Lani Trumble led the students on a field trip to Costa Rica this past April Vacation. They spent 10 days immersed in nature in the middle of the Costa Rican rainforest as part of their curriculum learning about the rainforest, its ecosystem, and the adaptations of the creatures who live there. Many individual members from United Parish generously donated funds to help pay for this trip. In addition, a $2,000 donation from the Missions Giving Committee helped fund a "lasting legacy" gift of kayak and snorkeling equipment and a microscope that will remain at the O2 for Life Rainforest Foundation property in Costa Rica to be used by countless student groups from Boston and Costa Rica for years to come. As a way to thank United Parish for this incredible generosity, students and staff from the McCormack, as well as O2 for Life founders, Domenique Aubin and Janis Rothbard, are joining us in worship this Sunday. In addition, they will all be available during Coffee Hour after church to informally talk with church members, share pictures from their trip and personally thank everyone. https://o2forlife.org/
It's not too late to participate in tomorrow's Walk for Hunger. Those who wish to walk with UP's Team will gather at 8am in the parking lot and sign up in the Deepening Room. We will be back in Coolidge Corner in time to attend the worship service. We will still have church school for children 6th grade and under.
This Sunday, member Amy McLaughlin-Sheasby will lead us in looking at the life of one of the earliest Christians, Perpetua, a noblewoman who lived in North Africa in the second century. At the time, the Roman Emperor thought that Christians undermined patriotism and began imprisoning and executing them. Perpetua kept a diary during the time, which tells us a lot about the kind of passion and commitment required to be a Christian when the stakes were really high. Are you ready for this Sunday's Walk for Hunger? The Walk for Hunger is the annual Project Bread fundraiser to benefit Massachusetts hunger programs. This year, Project Bread has agreed that 60% of our UP Team’s fundraising will go to the Brookline Food Pantry and 40% to hunger programs across the state. Turning to Wonder
This weekend we kicked off summer with our annual Strawberry Festival, and then continued to feel the Holy Spirit moving with Pentecost Sunday.
